OpenAI has unveiled GPT-5.4, its latest frontier artificial intelligence model, introducing enhanced reasoning, coding, and agentic capabilities designed to support complex professional tasks across business and development environments.
The new model available in ChatGPT as GPT-5.4 Thinking, and through the API and Codex, integrates recent advances in reasoning, software development, and workflow automation into a single platform. The company also announced GPT-5.4 Pro, a higher-performance version aimed at users requiring maximum capability for complex tasks.
According to OpenAI, GPT-5.4 builds on the coding strengths of GPT‑5.3‑Codex while improving its ability to work across enterprise tools such as spreadsheets, documents, and presentations. The model is designed to complete complex professional tasks more efficiently, reducing the need for multiple interactions and delivering more accurate outputs.
A key feature of GPT-5.4 Thinking in ChatGPT is the ability to provide an upfront plan of its reasoning process. This allows users to review and adjust the model’s approach while it is generating responses, improving alignment with user requirements without additional prompts. The model also enhances deep web research capabilities and maintains context over longer queries, enabling more precise responses for specialised topics.
For developers, GPT-5.4 introduces native computer-use capabilities in Codex and the API, allowing AI agents to operate computers and execute workflows across different applications. The model supports up to one million tokens of context, enabling agents to plan, execute, and verify complex tasks over extended workflows.
Additionally, GPT-5.4 improves integration across software ecosystems with a new tool search capability, helping agents identify and utilise relevant tools and connectors more effectively. OpenAI said the model is also its most token-efficient reasoning model to date, using significantly fewer tokens compared with GPT‑5.2, which can reduce operational costs and improve processing speed.
