Anthropic has announced the creation of the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, committing 5 per cent of the company's shares to the fund, subject to stockholder approval, with provisions to increase the allocation as the company's valuation grows. The initiative aims to expand funding for public-interest programmes addressing the societal and economic implications of artificial intelligence (AI).
Under the proposed structure, an additional 2 per cent of Anthropic's shares may be added at the board's discretion for every 50 per cent increase in the company's value above a defined baseline. The mechanism is designed to ensure that the resources dedicated to public benefit grow alongside the company's business.
Anthropic said the fund would provide greater flexibility to support its mission beyond activities conducted directly within the company. While its existing work includes AI safety and interpretability research, applied biomedical research, and discounted access to Claude for nonprofits and scientific institutions, the fund could support large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations.
One of the areas under consideration is the impact of AI on labour markets. Although AI could generate substantial economic value, its adoption may also create instability for workers and disrupt existing employment structures. Anthropic has previously committed $200 million to research and initiatives focused on economic futures, and the new fund could enable more extensive interventions as AI capabilities advance.
The company plans to establish the fund as a wholly owned limited liability company (LLC), rather than a 501(c)(3) organisation or another conventional charitable structure. According to Anthropic, this format will provide flexibility in determining how funds are distributed across different forms of public-benefit activity. The equity held by the LLC will not be used for lobbying or political contributions in the US or internationally.
The announcement builds on existing equity donation commitments by Anthropic's founders and employees. At the company's founding, its co-founders pledged to donate 80 per cent of their equity holdings. Anthropic also operates an employee equity donation-matching programme, with approximately half of its employees participating.
Including the new commitment, Anthropic estimates that roughly 20 per cent of its shares will be dedicated to public benefit, with the potential for further increases as the company reaches specified valuation milestones.
The initiative introduces an equity-linked approach to funding public-interest work as AI adoption accelerates. By tying potential contributions to company growth, Anthropic aims to expand the resources available to address challenges associated with AI development, including labour-market disruption and broader societal impacts.
