Anthropic has announced the acquisition of Stainless, a company specialising in SDK generation and Model Context Protocol (MCP) server tooling, in a move aimed at strengthening AI agent connectivity and developer experience across the Claude platform.
The acquisition reflects the growing shift in artificial intelligence from models that primarily generate responses to AI agents capable of interacting with external systems, tools, and data sources. According to Anthropic, expanding these connections is essential to increasing the usefulness and capabilities of AI agents.
Founded in 2022, Stainless has played a key role in supporting Anthropic’s developer ecosystem by powering the generation of official Anthropic SDKs since the early days of the Claude API. The company provides tools that automatically convert API specifications into software development kits (SDKs), command-line interfaces (CLIs), and MCP servers across multiple programming languages, including TypeScript, Python, Go, and Java.
“Stainless has shaped how developers experience the Claude API since the start, and it’s been great to work with them on that,” said Katelyn Lesse, Head of Platform Engineering at Anthropic. “Agents are only as useful as what they can connect to. We’re excited to bring the Stainless team into Anthropic to advance Claude’s ability to connect to data and tools.”
Alex Rattray, Founder and CEO of Stainless, said the partnership would help scale the company’s work within a rapidly evolving AI ecosystem. “We have been watching what developers have built on Claude over the last few years, which made bringing our teams together an easy decision,” he said.
Anthropic also highlighted the importance of the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard developed to improve connectivity between AI agents and external systems. By integrating the Stainless team and technology stack, the company aims to accelerate advancements in agent interoperability, API tooling, and developer productivity.
The acquisition comes amid rising industry focus on AI agents capable of performing complex tasks autonomously by interacting with enterprise software, databases, developer tools, and digital workflows.
