Google has announced plans to open Platform 37, a landmark building in London’s King’s Cross Station district, alongside the launch of The AI Exchange, a public space designed to foster greater understanding of artificial intelligence and its societal impact.

Set to open later this year, the new building will house teams from Google DeepMind and other Google AI divisions, bringing together researchers, engineers, and ethicists working on next-generation AI technologies.

The name Platform 37 references the building’s proximity to the historic railway hub and also commemorates the famous Move 37 played by AlphaGo, the AI system developed by Google DeepMind, during the landmark 2016 match against world Go champion Lee Sedol. The unexpected move became one of the most iconic moments in AI history, helping the system secure victory and marking a turning point in modern AI research.

A central feature of the development is The AI Exchange, a new public engagement space located on the building’s ground floor. The facility will host interactive exhibitions, educational programmes, and cultural events aimed at helping visitors explore AI technologies and discuss their implications for society.

The initiative reflects Google’s broader effort to promote transparency and public dialogue around emerging technologies while expanding awareness of AI’s applications across science and industry.

Platform 37 was designed by renowned architects Thomas Heatherwick and Bjarke Ingels and represents Google’s most ambitious office project to date. The building incorporates low-carbon construction materials and high energy-efficiency standards.

Its distinctive “hung” structural design creates a column-free interior workspace, offering flexible layouts that can adapt to evolving research and collaboration needs. The rooftop garden, developed in collaboration with the London Wildlife Trust and the London Borough of Camden, will feature dense planting intended to enhance biodiversity while providing views across the city.

Once operational, Platform 37 will serve as a major centre for Google’s AI research in Europe. The facility will support interdisciplinary collaboration aimed at advancing areas such as scientific discovery, materials research, and biological modelling—fields where AI has already accelerated progress since the breakthrough demonstrated by AlphaGo.

The company said the new hub reflects its long-term commitment to AI innovation in the UK and its ambition to continue pushing the frontiers of artificial intelligence while developing technologies responsibly.
