OpenAI has been recognised as a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise AI Coding Agents, highlighting the growing enterprise adoption of its AI-powered coding platform, Codex. The recognition reflects OpenAI’s continued expansion in agentic software development and enterprise AI deployment capabilities.
Codex, OpenAI’s AI coding agent, is currently used by more than four million people every week and supports enterprise customers including Cisco, Datadog, Dell Technologies, and NVIDIA. Since Gartner’s evaluation earlier this year, OpenAI has further enhanced Codex with the introduction of GPT-5.5, improved tool integration, faster performance, and deeper support for enterprise software development workflows.
According to OpenAI, software development is rapidly becoming more agentic, with developers increasingly delegating complex coding tasks to AI systems rather than relying solely on autocomplete functions. Codex is designed to understand large codebases, use development tools, execute changes, run tests, and prepare outputs for human review while maintaining enterprise-grade governance and security controls.
The Gartner report reportedly recognised Codex for strengths across enterprise governance, sandboxing, deployment flexibility, and agentic software development capabilities. OpenAI also highlighted its broad developer ecosystem, including the Codex app, IDE extensions, CLI tools, SDKs, and cloud orchestration features, alongside enterprise controls such as approval workflows, role-based access controls (RBAC), customisable policies, and auditable workspace governance.
OpenAI cited Cisco as a key enterprise example, noting that the company used Codex to build much of its AI Defence security platform, reducing software delivery timelines from several quarters to just weeks.
Commenting on the recognition, Denise Dresser said enterprises are increasingly focused not only on AI-generated code quality but also on safely deploying agentic AI systems at scale across business operations.
The recognition underscores growing momentum in enterprise AI coding agents as organisations seek faster software development while maintaining governance, security, and operational oversight.
