UNESCO has signed a new agreement with Tecnológico de Monterrey to strengthen collaboration on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education across Latin America and the Caribbean.
The agreement was formalised at UNESCO House in Santiago by Esther Kuisch Laroche, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Santiago, and Jorge Azzario, Executive Director for International Continuing Education at Tecnológico de Monterrey.
Developed through months of technical coordination and institutional validation since 2025, the partnership establishes a framework for joint efforts to generate evidence, set standards, and develop public policy recommendations on AI in education. A key focus will be the implementation of the Regional Observatory on Artificial Intelligence in Education for Latin America and the Caribbean.
As part of the agreement, Tecnológico de Monterrey will contribute $90,000 to support the initiative.
“The challenge is not only to incorporate new technologies, but to ensure that their use contributes to more inclusive, ethical and relevant education systems,” said Laroche, highlighting the shared goal of translating principles into practical solutions for the region.
Following the signing, technical teams from both organisations held a working session to review the Observatory’s first-year operational plan. Discussions covered capacity development, methodological frameworks, including teachers’ digital competencies and AI ethics, and the rollout of pilot projects in countries such as Chile, El Salvador, and Mexico.
The collaboration comes at a time when digital transformation and AI are rapidly reshaping education systems and workforce requirements, positioning the initiative as a key step toward more inclusive and future-ready learning ecosystems in the region.
