Swedish defence and security company Saab has announced a strategic investment of €11.1 million for a 10 per cent equity stake in Comand AI, a Paris-based startup specialising in artificial intelligence-driven battlefield planning solutions.
The investment is aimed at strengthening Saab’s command and control (C2) and C5ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) capabilities by integrating Comand AI’s AI-native technologies and expertise into Saab’s research and development ecosystem.
Comand AI develops advanced AI-powered planning tools designed to support military decision-making in complex operational environments. The collaboration is expected to contribute to the evolution of Saab’s next-generation defence platforms, including its GlobalEye airborne early warning and control system and ongoing multi-domain command-and-control initiatives.
“C5ISR systems are central to modern multi-domain operations, and advanced AI is an important enabler for future capability. By partnering with Comand AI, we are strengthening the development of Saab’s C2 and C5ISR capabilities while bringing Swedish defence expertise and French AI innovation together. This collaboration also underlines the value of European cooperation in support of long-term security,” said Carl-Johan Bergholm, Head of Saab’s Business Area Surveillance.
The partnership reflects the growing role of artificial intelligence in modern defence operations, where rapid data analysis, decision support and coordinated responses across air, land, sea, space and cyber domains are becoming increasingly critical.
Beyond technological integration, the investment is expected to deepen Saab’s collaboration with France’s innovation ecosystem and support broader European efforts to build sovereign defence capabilities. The companies said the move aligns intending to enhance Europe’s strategic autonomy through the development of advanced, scalable and secure defence technologies.
The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals. Once completed, it will further Saab’s strategy of combining internal innovation with targeted external partnerships to accelerate the development of AI-enabled defence solutions for customers worldwide.
The announcement highlights a broader trend across the global defence industry, where established defence contractors are increasingly investing in AI startups to strengthen capabilities in autonomous systems, battlefield intelligence and multi-domain operations.
