NEC Corporation has announced a strategic collaboration with Anthropic to deploy its AI assistant Claude across approximately 30,000 employees globally, as part of its plan to build one of Japan’s largest AI-native engineering organisations.
Under the partnership, NEC will also become Anthropic’s first Japan-based global partner, with both companies jointly developing secure, industry-specific AI solutions tailored to the Japanese market. Initial focus areas include finance, manufacturing, cybersecurity, and local government.
The collaboration will see NEC and Anthropic co-develop domain-specific AI products designed to meet Japan’s stringent requirements for safety, reliability, and quality. These solutions aim to accelerate digital transformation across key sectors while addressing growing demand for secure and compliant AI deployments.
As part of the initiative, NEC is already integrating Claude into its Security Operations Centre (SOC) services to strengthen cyber defence capabilities against increasingly sophisticated threats. The AI system will also be embedded into NEC’s next-generation cybersecurity offerings.
Additionally, Claude, including advanced models such as Claude Opus 4.7 and developer-focused tools like Claude Code, will be incorporated into NEC’s BluStellar Scenario programme, which delivers consulting, AI tools, and digital infrastructure solutions to enterprises. The integration will initially support data-driven management and customer experience use cases, with plans to expand further.
Internally, NEC will establish a dedicated Centre of Excellence to train and enable its workforce in AI-driven engineering practices. With support from Anthropic, the company aims to develop a highly skilled talent base leveraging Claude Code for software development and operational efficiency.
The deployment also aligns with NEC’s “Client Zero” strategy, where the company first applies its own technologies internally before offering them to customers. As part of this approach, NEC will expand the use of Claude across internal business operations to enhance productivity and innovation.
The partnership highlights a growing trend of global AI firms collaborating with regional technology leaders to localise advanced AI capabilities. By combining NEC’s deep industry expertise with Anthropic’s frontier AI models, the initiative is expected to play a key role in advancing Japan’s AI ecosystem and supporting enterprise adoption at scale.
“This long-term partnership enables us to maximise the potential of AI in Japan,” said NEC COO Toshifumi Yoshizaki, emphasising the focus on delivering high-quality, secure AI solutions for both enterprise and public sector applications.
As enterprises increasingly adopt AI-native workflows, collaborations like this underscore the shift toward integrating advanced AI systems into both core operations and customer-facing services.
