Google has introduced a new set of features for its AI platform Gemini, aimed at making it easier for users to switch from other AI assistants without losing their personal context or conversation history.
The update includes a “memory import” capability that allows users to transfer key personal details such as preferences, relationships, and past interactions from other AI applications into Gemini. This eliminates the need to start from scratch, enabling the assistant to quickly adapt to individual user needs. To use the feature, users can generate a summary of their data from another AI app and upload it into Gemini, where it is analysed and securely stored.
In addition to memory import, Google has also rolled out the ability to upload full chat histories. Users can now import conversations via ZIP files from other platforms and continue those interactions within Gemini. This move is designed to provide continuity and enhance user experience, particularly for those who rely heavily on AI tools for ongoing tasks and projects.
The company is also rebranding its “past chats” feature as “memory,” reflecting a broader shift toward what it calls “personal intelligence.” With user permission, Gemini can draw on data from services such as Gmail, Photos, Search history, and prior conversations to deliver more contextual and personalised responses.
According to Google, these enhancements are part of its effort to make AI assistants more intuitive and user-centric, reducing friction in adoption while deepening the level of personalisation. The features are being rolled out gradually to consumer accounts and are expected to expand in the coming weeks.
