India is accelerating its push in artificial intelligence (AI) with an investment of more than Rs 10,300 crore under the IndiaAI Mission, aimed at sharply boosting the country’s computing capabilities to 38,000 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) over the next five years.
The initiative is designed to make AI affordable, accessible and inclusive, while strengthening India’s position as a global leader in emerging technologies, the government said.
Official data shows that India’s technology and AI ecosystem currently employs over six million people, with the broader tech sector expected to cross $280 billion in revenue this year. Projections indicate that AI alone could contribute nearly $1.7 trillion to the Indian economy by 2035.
Launched in March 2024, the IndiaAI Mission focuses on building world-class digital infrastructure, encouraging innovation, supporting startups and developing indigenous AI models tailored to India’s needs. One of its key features is the provision of high-end GPUs at a subsidised rate of Rs 65 per hour, allowing startups, researchers and academic institutions to access advanced computing power at significantly lower costs.
India’s growing AI strength has also received global recognition. The country has been ranked the third most AI-competitive nation in Stanford University’s 2025 Global AI Vibrancy ranking, reflecting rapid progress in talent development, research output, startup activity and supportive policy frameworks.
India is home to more than 1,800 Global Capability Centres, including over 500 dedicated to AI, and nearly 89 per cent of startups launched last year incorporated AI into their products or services.
The IndiaAI Mission is structured around seven pillars, spanning compute infrastructure, application development, datasets, foundation models, future skills, startup financing, and safe and trusted AI. Initiatives such as AIKosh, the national dataset platform, and BharatGen, a multilingual foundational AI model, are expected to enable India-specific solutions across healthcare, agriculture, education, governance and climate services.
According to the government, the focus remains on responsible and inclusive AI adoption, ensuring that the benefits of technological advancement reach citizens across regions and sectors. With major global events such as the upcoming India AI Impact Summit 2026, India is set to further highlight its AI capabilities and deepen international collaboration in the field.
