Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a $1 billion investment to establish a dedicated Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) organisation, a new initiative designed to help enterprises rapidly build, deploy, and scale agentic AI systems while developing long-term in-house AI capabilities.

The new AWS FDE model embeds experienced AWS AI engineers directly within customer teams to co-develop production-ready AI solutions using an organisation's own data, governance frameworks, and business processes. Unlike traditional consulting engagements, AWS said the programme is designed to leave customers with both operational AI systems and the engineering expertise needed to continue innovating independently.

According to AWS, the initiative responds to growing enterprise demand for AI solutions that move beyond experimentation and become integral to business operations. Companies are increasingly seeking to redesign workflows around agentic AI—AI systems capable of autonomously planning, reasoning, and executing complex tasks with human oversight.

The Forward Deployed Engineering organisation will leverage AWS's AI-Driven Development Lifecycle, an approach that combines AI-powered software development with human supervision throughout the design, development, deployment, and optimisation process. Purpose-built AI agents will assist engineers at every stage of the software lifecycle, helping compress implementation timelines from months to days while improving development efficiency.

AWS said the model differs from conventional consulting by focusing on measurable business outcomes rather than project-based engagements or billable hours. Each deployment is intended to create reusable AI workflows, engineering practices, and deployment patterns that customers can apply across future AI initiatives.

The company also emphasised the role of the AWS Partner Network in the programme. Technology and consulting partners will contribute industry expertise, AI model specialisation, and implementation support, while AWS plans to invest in partner training, tools, and resources to expand the availability of Forward Deployed Engineering services.

The announcement underscores AWS's broader strategy to accelerate enterprise AI adoption by combining cloud infrastructure, agentic AI capabilities, and hands-on engineering support, enabling organisations to transition from AI experimentation to becoming AI-native businesses.
