Visual communications platform Canva has introduced Magic Layers, a new AI-powered feature that converts static images into fully editable design assets within the platform. The technology, currently available in public beta, aims to give creators greater flexibility by turning flat image files into structured layers that can be modified directly in the Canva editor.
The launch addresses a growing challenge in the era of generative AI: while AI tools have dramatically increased the volume of visual content being created, much of that output remains locked in static formats such as PNG or JPG files. Making even minor changes often requires generating a completely new image through prompts, which can unintentionally alter the entire design.
Magic Layers seeks to bridge this gap by enabling users to upload an image and automatically convert it into an editable layout. The system intelligently separates visual components into individual objects, preserves the original layout structure, and keeps text elements fully editable. Once processed, designers can move elements, change fonts, swap backgrounds, or refine details without starting from scratch.
The feature also works with AI-generated content produced within the Canva platform. Users can generate designs using Canva’s AI tools and immediately edit them in the editor, allowing faster iteration for presentations, documents, marketing materials, and social media content.
According to Cameron Adams, co-founder and Chief Product Officer at Canva, the goal is to move beyond one-time AI image generation toward a more flexible creative workflow. He noted that while AI has accelerated content creation, many generated images remain difficult to adapt, limiting their usefulness in real-world design processes.
Magic Layers currently supports single-page PNG and JPG files during its beta phase, with additional capabilities planned for future releases. The company said the technology is particularly useful for marketing teams updating campaigns, small businesses revising product messaging, and creators refining visual concepts without repeatedly generating new images.
With the introduction of Magic Layers, Canva aims to make AI-generated visuals more adaptable, transforming them from static outputs into editable starting points for ongoing creative work.
