Toshiba Information Equipment (Philippines) Inc. (TIP), a hard disk drive (HDD) manufacturing company of Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation, has expanded nearline HDD production at its Laguna Technopark (LTI) facility in the Philippines, as demand for high-capacity data-centre storage grows with the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud services.
The company recently began manufacturing nearline HDDs at the facility and has made its first shipment from the newly expanded production line. Nearline HDDs are high-capacity storage devices designed for data-centre applications, including AI and cloud workloads, where growing volumes of data require scalable storage infrastructure.
The expansion comes as Toshiba seeks to increase its HDD manufacturing capacity in response to rising global demand for data-centre storage. TIP plans to nearly double its annual production capacity by FY2027 compared with FY2025, measured on a storage-capacity basis.
TIP, which began operations in the Philippines in 1996 manufacturing 2.5-inch HDDs for personal computers, has expanded its role within Toshiba’s global HDD manufacturing network over the past three decades. Its LTI facility previously focused primarily on HDDs for personal computers and has now strengthened its capabilities for nearline HDD production.
“As the Toshiba Group's HDD manufacturing site, we will continue to support the data infrastructure required in the AI era while contributing to the development of the Philippine economy,” said Kenichi Myokan, President & Representative Director, Toshiba Information Equipment (Philippines) Inc.
The company said its manufacturing expansion will also involve investment in engineering and technical talent to build capabilities required for the next phase of operations.
Alongside capacity expansion, TIP is strengthening its sustainability initiatives. In 2026, the company obtained ISO 50001 certification for its energy management system, supporting its efforts to improve energy efficiency across manufacturing operations.
The production expansion was announced as TIP marked its 30th anniversary. The company said its continued investment in HDD manufacturing is aimed at supporting the data infrastructure underpinning AI and cloud services while strengthening the Philippines’ role in global electronics manufacturing and exports.
