At the Smart City Summit & Expo (SCSE) 2026, Smart City Takeshiba, led by Tokyu Land Corporation in collaboration with SoftBank Corp. and Takeshiba Area Management Association, was presented as a globally recognised model for integrated, data driven urban development.
The initiative, recently selected as a finalist in the World Smart City Awards under the “Enabling Technology” category at the Smart City Expo World Congress 2025, highlights how real time data platforms can transform city operations, improve citizen experiences, and strengthen urban resilience.
At the core of Smart City Takeshiba is a Smart City Platform that integrates diverse data sources including building systems, mobility data, environmental inputs, and public infrastructure, creating a unified digital layer for city management. This platform enables real time analysis and decision making, supporting both operational efficiency and long term planning.
The project leverages digital signage, mobile applications, and citizen interfaces, including integration with widely used platforms such as LINE, to deliver real time information and services directly to residents, workers, and visitors.
A key focus of the initiative is improving urban mobility and area circulation, using data insights to optimise pedestrian flow, reduce congestion, and enhance the overall accessibility and attractiveness of the district.
Equally significant is its contribution to urban safety and disaster resilience. The platform provides real time alerts, hazard information, and evacuation guidance, enabling cities to respond more effectively to emergencies such as earthquakes and extreme weather events. Through push notifications and integrated communication systems, citizens receive timely updates and recommended actions, strengthening preparedness and response capabilities.
The project also demonstrates strong citizen engagement and co creation, adopting Living Lab methodologies that incorporate user feedback into continuous service improvement. This ensures that solutions are not only technologically advanced but also aligned with real world needs.
Smart City Takeshiba further stands out for its replicability and scalability, offering a model that can be adapted to other urban environments facing similar challenges in mobility, disaster management, and public service delivery.
With over a decade of area management experience and ongoing collaboration between government, private sector, and local communities, the initiative represents a mature and operational smart city ecosystem rather than a pilot concept.
As cities worldwide seek practical and proven frameworks for digital transformation, Smart City Takeshiba underscores how integrated platforms, real time data utilisation, and multi stakeholder collaboration can deliver measurable improvements in urban living, sustainability, and resilience.
Its presence at the Smart City Expo reinforces the growing importance of deployable, citizen centric smart city solutions, positioning Japan as a key contributor to the global evolution of intelligent urban environments.
