Google has concluded the Parliamentary Showcase for Build with AI: Code for Communities, a nationwide initiative aimed at connecting technology innovation with local governance and community needs.
Held on 22 July in New Delhi in collaboration with The Dialogue, the showcase featured 12 winning developer teams presenting live AI applications to Members of Parliament (MPs). The initiative will now move into its next phase, with selected solutions set to be piloted in real-world constituencies.
The programme brought together more than 7,000 developers across over 18 Indian cities and generated more than 1,000 open-source projects built using Google’s AI stack, including Gemini and Gemma. The problem statements were sourced directly from sitting MPs and focused on four key areas: civic and governance, environment, public health and agriculture.
In civic and governance, developers created multilingual AI platforms designed to aggregate citizen feedback and help optimise local development budgets. Environmental solutions included real-time pollution tracking systems that combine satellite, sensor and citizen-generated data to identify local pollution hotspots.
In public health, AI command centres were developed for rural health clinics to predict medicine stock-outs and track resources. Agriculture-focused solutions included Indic-language voice and SMS tools that provide smallholder farmers with satellite-backed crop advice.
“AI offers a generational opportunity to leapfrog old problems and create new solutions for humanity’s biggest challenges,” said a Google India spokesperson. “Through initiatives like ‘Code for Communities’, India’s world-class developers and thriving digital infrastructure are setting a global standard.”
The spokesperson added that the initiative demonstrates how AI can be applied to areas such as smart health centres, crop yield prediction and local pollution tracking at population scale. Google also emphasised the importance of responsible AI development and expanding access to training and technology so that the benefits of AI reach a wider section of society.
With the transition to constituency-level pilots, the initiative aims to move beyond prototype development and explore how AI-powered solutions can address real-world challenges in local communities across India.
