Google has announced a collaboration with the University of Oxford to provide students, faculty members and administrators with access to its most advanced artificial intelligence tools, including Gemini for Education and NotebookLM, supporting learning, research and collaboration across the institution.
Following a successful pilot programme, Oxford will now make these tools broadly available through its secure Google for Education workspace. Under the expanded rollout, university departments and colleges can obtain Gemini Pro licences, while Gemini for Education and NotebookLM are being offered to all staff and students. During the pilot, 85 per cent of respondents reported increased productivity, while nearly 75 per cent said the AI tools helped them work more effectively.
Gemini for Education includes Guided Learning, a personal learning companion designed to promote deeper understanding through structured questioning and step-by-step guidance, rather than simply generating answers. Oxford staff and students also have secure access to Gemini 3, Google’s latest AI model, which is grounded in learning science and developed in collaboration with education experts.
Gemini Pro licences further provide access to Deep Research, an AI-powered academic assistant capable of generating multi-step research plans, analysing hundreds of relevant web sources, and synthesising findings into comprehensive, multi-page reports with citations.
The collaboration aims to enhance research productivity, support grant development, and enable more personalised learning pathways, while also strengthening AI literacy across the university community. Oxford has positioned the initiative as part of a broader effort to deploy AI tools securely and responsibly within higher education.
Alwyn Collinson, Head of the AI Competency Centre at the University of Oxford, said the partnership would enable researchers, academics and students to harness AI’s potential to accelerate high-impact research and drive innovation to address global challenges.
By expanding access to secure, best-in-class AI solutions, Oxford is reinforcing its position as a global leader in education and research, while demonstrating how universities can strategically adopt AI to support teaching, discovery and operational efficiency.
